The seven-slot Cisco 7000 supports multiprotocol, multimedia routing and bridging with a wide variety of protocols and combinations of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), serial, High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI), channel attachment, and multichannel media. Network interfaces reside on modular interface processors, which provide a direct connection between the high-speed Cisco Extended Bus (CxBus) and the external network.

The Cisco 7000 has seven slots: five interface processor slots (0 through 4), one slot for the Switch Processor (SP) or Silicon Switch Processor (SSP), and one slot for the Route Processor (RP). Distributed processing is accomplished by the RP, SP, and SSP. There are bays for up to two AC-input or DC-input power supplies. Network interfaces reside on interface processors that provide a direct connection between the two Cisco Extended Buses (CyBuses) and your external networks.
